The first step in overcoming infertility is to find out what is causing it.

When experiencing fertility issues, it is important to run several tests before starting treatment. These tests are designed to help doctors reach an accurate diagnosis and design a personalised treatment.

Ovarian reserve testing and sperm analysis are normally the first IVF diagnostic procedures to be carried out.

After experiencing miscarriages or a number of unsuccessful IVF treatments, then it’s likely that more sophisticated diagnostic testing is needed. Such testing is not only designed to save time and expenses, but to help fertility doctors choose the most appropriate treatment for you personally.

What are the necessary IVF diagnostic procedures for women?

When a woman who is trying to conceive needs fertility treatment, it is important to run several IVF diagnostic tests to identify the fertility issue and provide insights regarding the most appropriate treatment.

Here are the most common diagnostic tests for female fertility patients:

  • HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY

This is an important examination which checks the outline of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

  • HORMONAL PROFILE

The consideration of FSH – E2 – AMH can help decide on the protocol, the appropriate drug, and the correct dosage to achieve optimal results during ovarian stimulation.

  • MAMMOGRAPHY

Mammograms must be performed for preventive reasons in women over 40, in cases of family history or in case the patient has undergone a large number of IVF attempts in the past.

  • LAPAROSCOPY

It is not only a diagnostic test, but also an invasive method if needed. Laparoscopies allow doctors to check the morphology of the uterus and ovaries, the condition of the fallopian tubes, the existence of endometriosis etc.

Thus, a woman’s fertility problem can be solved before undergoing IVF.

What are the necessary IVF diagnostic tests for men?

When investigating infertility, it is necessary to thoroughly test both partners. The most necessary IVF diagnostic test for males is semen analysis (spermogram). Depending on the results of this test and the medical history of the patient, more specialized tests may be required.

Here are the most common diagnostic tests for male fertility patients:

  • Sperm analysis
  • MAR test – In cases where the MAR test indicates the presence of antisperm antibodies > 50%, ICSI IVF is recommended
  • Sperm activation
  • Sperm culture – A test where semen is placed in contact with selective and non-selective media that favour the growth of bacteria to study its sensitivity to antibiotics (antibiogram)
  • Investigation of severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT)
  • Genetic testing of sperm – The Sperm DNA Fragmentation test is a prerequisite at Redia IVF during our eligibility process. Under special circumstances, a second one called FISH Sperm test might be requested
