The desire for motherhood doesn’t always come at the right time. Maybe we spend years waiting for the proper timing to create a family, or we may constantly feel ready, but the circumstances are not right.
You Can Achieve Your Wishes
Women nowadays get an education, build their careers, travel, and start focusing on their motherhood plan very often after 30. And when the right moment arrives, we often try hard to get pregnant with no result. And on many occasions, we face a great dilemma: own eggs or egg donation?
At Redia IVF, we are here to advise, guide, and help you make the best decision.
What’s The Reason For An IVF With Egg Donation?
Many women believe that they are fertile as long as they have regular cycles. But this is quite misleading. Ovarian reserve (quantity and quality of oocytes) may decrease at age 30 or even earlier, and it drops rapidly after age 40. The probability of ovulating a chromosomally abnormal egg increases, resulting in lower fertility and an increased risk of miscarriage. Patients with genetic disorders mostly luckily choose to attempt pregnancy through IVF with donor eggs to avoid the possibility of passing along a genetic condition to their babies.
IVF with donor eggs makes it possible for women with a functioning uterus to carry a baby using donor eggs from a younger woman. This assisted reproduction technique is often recommended to fertility patients who cannot conceive using their own eggs for whatever reason.
What Is An Egg Donation Procedure?
Egg donation comprises both the egg donor’s cycle and the recipient’s cycle. First, the egg donor undergoes ovarian stimulation for around 14 days. On the day of the egg retrieval, the eggs are retrieved. At this point, they can be fertilised or frozen.
After the egg retrieval, these eggs are fertilised with the male partner’s sperm or donor sperm in a fresh cycle. During the donor’s stimulation, the recipient’s uterus has been synchronised with the donor’s dates. Therefore, at the time of the egg retrieval, the recipient is ready for a transfer 5 days later. Then, the embryos resulting from this in vitro fertilisation procedure are transferred to the future mother’s uterus, usually on day 5, to be implanted, resulting in a pregnancy.
Frozen donor eggs or frozen embryos have become a popular alternative. Donors undergo stimulation, and the eggs are retrieved and frozen for potential recipients. Or the embryos are created, and when they reach day 5 in the lab, they are frozen. These options delete the need to synchronise the donor and recipient cycle.
The recipient takes medication for the endometrial preparation (estrogen to thicken the endometrium) for around 10-12 days. Then, she’ll have an ultrasound around day 12 to ensure that the endometrium is thick enough to allow implantation (about 7mm) and that she has not ovulated (sometimes an extra medication is administered to avoid spontaneous ovulation). If everything is fine, she’ll start taking progesterone (generally vaginal pessaries) 5 days before the transfer.
IVF treatment with donor eggs is one of the assisted-reproduction techniques with the highest success rates.
How Can I Find The Best Egg Donor?
Finding the most suitable donor may be significant.
Donors are generally selected according to age, health and medical history. They pass medical and psychological health evaluations. Genetic and karyotype (chromosome) testing is also performed commonly. Fertility doctors assure the ideal match: optimal physical and immunological compatibility with the recipient in cases with an anonymous donation. In some countries where the legislation allows open donation, couples or single mothers can choose their egg donors from a comprehensive list of profiles.
